Grateful Bread’s biggest account prior to the pandemic was the Pepsi Center. But retail sales picked up because people wanted to eat bread during the lockdown.
Denver joins cities like New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, which passed similar regulations earlier in the pandemic.
The 12,220-square-foot location at the Colorado Center was originally slated to open in April, but then the pandemic arrived.
Defendant’s Northside Eatery + Market opened earlier this year next to the plaintiff’s 303 Beauty Bar, which is at 1671 Central St.
The eatery in Lakewood, made famous by ‘South Park,’ hasn’t reopened since the pandemic began.
“I wanted to figure out a way to give back but also start spreading awareness,” said Lekker Coffee co-owner Kara Finklestein of plans to donate 10 percent of profits to a rhino sanctuary.
The eatery, which has been a hotspot on Pennsylvania Street for 26 years, would join local bookstore Tattered Cover within the mixed-use project next to Coors Field.
“A lot of people aren’t aware that in addition to the customer paying a fee, the restaurant also pays a commission,” City Councilwoman Kendra Black said.
“Our sales are at about 40 percent right now, and it’s been somewhat sustainable. But winter is coming,” said co-owner Niya Gingerich.
The buyer, who also owns a deli in a Boulder business park, said she and her daughters live in Denver and have been wanting to open a business here.
