Cherry Creek hotel changes name as three-year renovation wraps up

There’s a new name in the Cherry Creek hotel scene.

The JW Marriott at 150 Clayton Lane, the neighborhood’s oldest hotel, began operating as Hotel Clio on Tuesday.

“Today is day one,” said Sean McNamara, the property’s director of sales and marketing.

The 11-story, 199-room hotel is still affiliated with Marriott. It’s now part of the company’s “luxury collection” brand, which consists of 19 properties in the United States, including The Hythe hotel in Vail.

McNamara said the rebrand marks the end of three years of renovations that spanned the property, including guestrooms and its restaurant. The final piece to be renovated was the lobby, he said.

The JW Marriott opened in June 2004, and was the sole large hotel in the neighborhood for years. But the lodging scene has gotten more competitive in the past half decade.

Matt Joblon’s BMC Investments developed the upscale Halcyon and more affordable Moxy, and also converted the former Inn at Cherry Creek into Clayton Members Club & Hotel; all three properties opened since 2016. And Navin Dimond’s Stonebridge Cos. developed The Jacquard, which opened in 2018 and is part of Marriott’s “autograph collection.”

Hotel Clio, which is named after a Greek goddess, is owned by Maryland-based DiamondRock Hospitality Co., which purchased the JW Marriott in 2011 for $72.6 million, records show. The hotel is operated by Denver-based Sage Hospitality Group.

The cheapest room at Hotel Clio was about $340 for this Wednesday night, and $275 for this coming Saturday night, according to the hotel’s website.

Correction: The room figure has been updated to incorporate the hotel’s six suites.
