Demolition began Thursday on the Columbine Country Club’s former clubhouse. It’s the first step in a $20 million plan to build a new, 50,000-square-foot structure.
Backhoes began leveling the 38,000-square-foot clubhouse at 8:30 a.m. Thursday just before snow began to fall. Neighborhood residents flocked to the site to take pictures of the demolition and bid the building farewell.
Demolition workers will finish leveling the building by the end of the week, and debris will be cleared by mid-April. Construction will begin soon after that and is slated to be completed in June 2017.
Columbine Country Club opened in 1955 and the clubhouse was built in 1976, according to Arapahoe County records. The club, which has 530 members, hosted the PGA Championship in 1967.
