The first Boulder home built using shipping containers has hit the market with a price tag of $3.15 million.

The four-bedroom, four-bathroom property at 505 College Ave. by the foot of Flagstaff Mountain went up for sale July 13.

Couple Mark Gelband and Courtney Loveman built the 4,000-square-foot contemporary home in 2012. Two 53-foot shipping containers comprise the home’s second level.

“The owners poured their heart and soul into this home,” said listing agent Zach Zeldner of Compass. “They wish there were things they could take with them or replicate in their next home. They have loved living in the home.”

Address: 505 College Ave., Boulder

List price: $3.15 million

Stats: The custom home’s main level features 1,800 square feet with concrete floors, oversized windows and soaring ceilings finished with 100-year-old bar wood. Downstairs, a 958-square-foot finished basement is available for storage.

The shipping containers comprise the 1,200-square-foot upper level, and two of the upstairs bedrooms share a 500-square-foot deck.

The current owner built the home himself and sourced materials from his friends and connections.

The finer things: Sitting on an elevated lot, the unique property has Flatirons views to the south, unobstructed Red Rocks and Foothills views to the north, and eastern vistas over downtown Boulder.

The open concept kitchen can accommodate any size dinner party, and features custom Scandinavian cabinets, concrete counters, a farm sink and a gas range stove. A glass and steel garage door in the living room opens up to the patio with an outdoor kitchen and fire pit.

Upstairs, the master suite features a huge walk-in closet, a sitting area, two private additional decks and its own staircase.

The home also features a two-car detached garage, which was custom-built from shipping containers, as well.

Sellers: Loveman is vice president and co-head of strategy for Boulder-based advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, according to her LinkedIn listing. Gelband previously was the chief marketing officer for Ello, a social network for artists, according to the company’s website.
