This home could be the answer to someone’s prayers.

A church in Cherry Creek that was converted to a single-family residence about a decade ago has hit the market, asking price $4.25 million.

The former St. John’s the Evangelist church at 2401 E. 5th Ave. was built in the early 1900s.

Reconverted into a single-family home, the former church still has its stain-glassed windows.

Now a three-bedroom, four-bathroom home, it’s owned by Dave Veldman and his wife Linda, according to public records.

Veldman, founder and president of Fort Collins-based Veldman Morgan Commercial, converted the church and nearby clergy house into a condominium complex in 2008, according to the property’s website. Known as St. John’s Gardens on 5th Avenue, the complex consists of the former church (“The Sanctuary”), two townhomes (“The Rectory”) and six condos.

Jeff Hendley with Compass Real Estate is listing The Sanctuary.

“What’s really cool about this church is that it’s maintenance-free, so anything on the exterior, like roofing, landscaping and snow removal is handled,” Hendley said. “It gives a single family the opportunity to feel like they’re living in a second or third home right here in Cherry Creek.”

The home has 35-foot tall ceilings.

Address: 2401 E. 5th Ave. Unit #1

List price: $4.25 million

Stats: The two-story home sits on an 8,000-square-foot lot and has 3,682 square feet above ground plus a 1,676-square-foot basement.

The finer things: The Sanctuary’s lofted 35-foot ceilings and stained windows are reminiscent of its past, but the numerous intimate sitting areas, private study and upper-level loft-style master bedroom bring a new life to the property.

The marble staircase descends three levels.

“Everyone who walks in is amazed by not only the quality of construction but also how quiet it is and how livable it is,” Hendley said.

The property features a dining area that fits 20 or more couples, a gourmet kitchen and a suspended marble staircase to all three levels.

Downstairs, the fully finished basement has direct access to the condo community’s private parking garage, where four spots are reserved for The Sanctuary.
