Tee time is still up in the air at City Park Golf Course.
The city-owned course, which originally was expected to reopen this fall following two years of renovations, still doesn’t have a set opening date, according to Denver Public Works spokeswoman Nancy Kuhn.
“We will not determine an opening date for the golf course until likely late spring or early summer of next year, when we’d be able to gauge establishment of the turf following the winter season and determine if the turf is ready to handle people and golf cart traffic,” Kuhn said in an email Thursday.
BusinessDen reported in April that low temperatures and high precipitation earlier this year had delayed turf growth on the course. Denver Parks and Recreation spokeswoman Cyndi Karvaski said at the time that while the golf course wouldn’t reopen in 2019 as originally planned, the city was anticipating a spring 2020 opening date.

Kuhn said that a spring opening is still possible, but that a determination can’t be made “until spring arrives and the turf can be assessed.”
“City Park Golf Course will reopen for play when the turf is fully established in order to protect the new turf from being damaged,” Kuhn said. “Establishment of the turf is largely dependent upon the weather the rest of this year and spring of next year.”
The $45 million renovation of the golf course is intended mainly to integrate water-detention areas to help protect nearby neighborhoods from flooding. The project also includes a new layout for the 18-hole, par-71 course, a full driving range and a new clubhouse with event space.
The course closed for the improvements in November 2017.
The city originally expected to reopen the course this fall to “limited play” without the use of carts. Kuhn said the city may still opt to do so.
The stormwater-detention work has been fully operational since the spring. Kuhn said Thursday that the detention area, which captures and conveys stormwater runoff through the system and into the South Platte River, is reducing the risk of floods for thousands of nearby homes.

The new clubhouse, which features a west-facing patio and floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the mountains and city skyline, is nearing completion.
“Final items are being addressed at the clubhouse,” Kuhn said. “We’re anticipating a certificate of occupancy in mid-December.”
After securing a certificate of occupancy, Kuhn said the concessionaire “may open for special events.” It will be open for daily operations once the course opens.
The completed course also will feature a full driving range of over 300 yards, Kuhn said.
“Everyone is very excited about how the course has turned out in terms of its new design,” she said. “People are going to love the views from the new clubhouse.”
Broomfield-based iConGolf Studio redesigned the course in collaboration with Hale Irwin Golf Design. The new clubhouse was designed by Johnson Nathan Strohe. Saunders Construction is the general contractor.
