After more than a decade covering outdoor news from Minneapolis, it was time to move to the mountains.

Gear Junkie, an online publication for outdoor news and gear, is opening a Denver basecamp. Founder and publisher Stephen Regenold, with editor-in-chief Sean McCoy, are opening a Denver editorial office in Wayfinder Coop, a coworking space for outdoors businesses located at 525 Sante Fe Drive.

“It made sense because so much of the outdoors is here and we see it growing here as fast as anywhere in the country,” McCoy said. “It also is an easy place to commute back and forth between Minneapolis and Denver.”

Gear Junkie is paying about $1,000 per month for a 200-square-foot independent office at Wayfinder, but McCoy said it hopes to expand to more space in coming months.

“Being in on the ground floor with them has offered some unique opportunities to build a physical space to meet our needs,” he said. “We liked the location. It just seemed like an easy, simple fit.”

McCoy, 42, has worked remotely for Gear Junkie from Denver for seven years. He previously worked for the Virgin Island Daily News in the Caribbean for 10 years before joining Regenold in starting the new site.

“Five years ago, we were pushing probably 15,000 page views a day,” McCoy said. “Now we’re around 100,000 page views a day or more.”

Two Gear Junkie employees are moving from Minneapolis in May, and he hopes to hire at least three more people to help build out the editorial side of the publication.
