The owners of Denver Beer Co. know they have some prime real estate, having tapped into Platte Street before the building boom.
Now they want to better use that square footage, with a new Mexican beer-tasting room in their former Barrel Room, which was used for special events.
Denver Beer Co. announced Tuesday its plans to open Cerveceria Colorado at 1635 Platte St. Cerveceria, which means brewery in Spanish, will share the building with Denver Beer Co.’s existing taproom there.
Co-founder Patrick Crawford said Denver Beer Co. will be the parent company of the new brand.
Crawford and co-founder Charlie Berger were looking for a better use of the Barrel Room, and the company’s head brewer Jason Buehler had been judging beer competitions in Mexico. The idea to collaborate with Mexican brewers in Colorado became Cerveceria.
The two founders wanted to keep the new concept near Platte Street, they said, because developments have helped bring more customers to the brewery.
“We think it is probably the best location in the entire city of Denver to have a business,” Crawford said.
The pair is investing $150,000 to convert the Barrel Room space into the new taproom, which they aim to open by April or May. Cerverceria is being funded by profits from Denver Beer Co. It will use Spectrum General Contractor for the buildout.
Part of the transition in the space will include Latin-themed murals from local artists Pedro Barrios and Jamie Molina.
Berger and Crawford said the brewery has experimented on a churro stout and a Vienna lager with lime. There’s also room for beers aged in tequila barrels or brewed with molé sauce.
Crawford said Cerveceria will start with five or six beers, and may eventually expand to 10. The beers will only be available in the taproom at first, but they may eventually expand to canning at Denver Beer Co.’s production facility at 4455 Jason St. in Denver.
Denver Beer Co. brewed just over 13,000 barrels of beer last year. Crawford said this venture likely will start with around 1,000 barrels in its first year.
