Alex Hanifin is cooking with gas, now.
Alpine Start, the coffee brand she co-founded in Boulder to bring tastier java to the adventuring sort, raised $1 million in capital, according to a recent SEC filing.
Hanifin said the startup plans to spend the funds to hire more people, release new flavors and attend more outdoor festivals and events to market the product.
She launched Alpine Start with professional climber Matt Segal in 2016, and the single-serve instant coffee brand is now on shelves of more than 500 stores nationwide, including REI, Whole Foods and Texas-based HEB Grocery Stores.
San Francisco-based Slow Ventures led the round, Hanifin said.
Alpine Start employs four people at its 1,200-square-foot office in Boulder. A packet of eight individual coffee servings costs $9 on the company’s website.
Hanifin said Alpine is superior to other instant coffees in taste, for which it uses a precise ratio of pressure and temperature while dehydrating the coffee. It manufactures the coffee in Italy, and the powder can be mixed into any liquid at any temperature.
