Three Denver media lawyers who have worked for The Denver Post and Westword soon will stand under a new flag.
First Amendment and media attorneys Thomas Kelley, Ashley Kissinger and Steven Zansberg will become staffers at the Denver office of Ballard Spahr after it merged with their current firm, Levine Sullivan Koch and Schulz.
Ballard Spahr has an office at 1225 17th St. Between Boulder and Denver, it has 30 lawyers practicing in Colorado.
“What they bring to us is a national reputation in a discrete area of the law that we think will be busy for the near future,” said Steven Suflas, managing partner of the Denver office, adding that LSKS just won a dismissal for The New York Times after the paper was sued by Sarah Palin.

Suflas said LSKS first approached Ballard about the merger, but did not disclose financial details of the arrangement. LSKS will move out of its office at 1888 Sherman St. at the end of this month.
Ballard has 500 lawyers spread across 13 U.S. offices. Its areas of expertise include corporate law, public finance, real estate and litigation.
“If you go back 18 months, every one of the partners here in Denver has tried a case before a jury or judge to verdict,” Suflas said. “That sets us apart in the marketplace.”
LSKS has offices in Denver, Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C., and specializes in helping media organizations navigate areas of law including defamation, privacy, freedom of information and intellectual property rights. Its Colorado media clients have included ABC affiliate KMGH-TV, The Durango Herald, the Denver Post and Westword.
LSKS is not the only firm to join Ballard nationwide – it announced a second merger with law firm Lindquist and Vennum, effective Jan. 1, 2018. Suflas said will increase Ballard’s lawyer count to 50 in Denver.
“We can fit everybody right now, but we’re also anticipating more growth,” Suflas said. “If we need additional real estate, we can accomplish that at our current location.”
