Tiny homes are becoming a big business.
The first Colorado Tiny House Festival was held this weekend on the grounds of the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg. Professional and personal builders drove in their tiny houses to show on the dusty plains.
The festival featured more than 20 builders, many of which started their business in the last year. Trailer Made Custom Trailers co-owner Damon DesChamp has been in the industry since its start. The company builds steel frames and trailers as the foundation of a tiny house.
“This industry is very young,” DesChamp said. “We’re grandfathers at 5 years old.”
Several builders were selling tiny homes in the $50,000-$75,000 range. But tiny does not mean basic. Kate Large with Rainbow Tiny Home Builders said the company will add a fireplace into the model they brought to the festival.
Other homes had bike storage, porches, and even a rooftop deck. Festival attendees were able to walk through the models.
TruHome Creations, owned by Jodi and Chad Hanson, made small houses and playsets for pets. The couple custom builds based off the size of the animal. The 3-foot teardrop, trailer style home the Hansons made for their dog took 36 hours to build.
“I love taking a pile of wood and being able to make it into something,” Chad Hanson said.
