When it came time to expand out of Idaho Springs, a 10-year-old barbecue shop scoured Denver for three years before settling on a development with the perfect name.
Smokin Yard’s BBQ will open in September at the corner of West First Avenue and South Santa Fe Drive in a project called – appropriately enough – The Yard.
The barbecue joint recently took out a SBA loan for $620,000 to fund the new store, and borrowed $500,000 to switch from renting to owning its Idaho Springs store.
“We provide the best food and service, better than any of the other barbecue restaurants in town,” co-owner Ian Yard said, “based on what I’ve tried and what guests have told us.”
The Idaho Springs location sells 150 pounds of beef brisket every weekend. The fan favorite meat comes on a sandwich with a side for $10.
Smokin Yard’s was started a decade ago by Yard’s dad and brother, Alan and Scott. Originally from Texas, the Yard family moved to Colorado 30 years ago. Ian joined the business five years ago, and he and his wife Chris will run the new Denver location.
Yard, 37, said the restaurant’s strength is product consistency.
“We still have enough people running and controlling the quality of food. Chains can’t do that,” he said. “That’s what has kept us successful – we haven’t let go of the reins to anyone.”
The business signed a lease for 4,000 square feet in the new storefront, which will feature an indoor smoker and a garage door that opens to a small covered patio.
The barbecue joint will join tenants in The Yard development including Renegade Brewing Co., Fin Art Co., Rocky Mountain Flex Fitness, Board Game Republic and Inspired Training Center. Two more neighbors, Deviation Distilling and Copper Door Coffee Roasters, are opening soon.
Yard said there is a need for barbecue in Denver, but the restaurant industry is tough.
Colorado Springs-based Southern Concepts Restaurant Group closed three barbecue restaurants in Denver this week. Early this year, concert promoter Scott Campbell took over Globe Hall, the barbecue and bluegrass music venue. Last year, Big Country’s closed its brick-and-mortar store after six months.
