The founder of the Discovery Channel is selling a piece of property fit to make Bear Grylls jealous.
John Hendricks has listed West Creek Ranch, which spans 7,000 acres on the Colorado-Utah border – about half the size of Manhattan.
The list price: $149 million.
“You have dinosaur prints along the creek. You’ve got a collection of gorgeous rivers and streams,” said Kerry Endsley, who is listing the property with LIV Sotheby’s International Realty. “The planet’s story is right there … like a parfait right in front of your face.”
The main 22,000-square-foot residence at the ranch, built in 2001, is located through the Unaweep Canyon three miles from Gateway, Colorado. The property also includes a two-bedroom guest house and a three-bedroom log house. In total, the ranch has 14 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms.
“When you drive there, you literally have to squint to find the house,” Endsley said. “It doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb, like you see in Beverly Hills.”
Included in the property sale are two airplane hangars, an air strip, helipad, planetarium, limousines, and stables and pastures for the horses and bison, Endsley said.
The main lodge runs on a geothermal system and is built with tan stucco that blends into its natural surroundings.
The ranch covers about 6,400 acres in Colorado and 500 in Utah, spanning an elevation difference of 3,000 feet, meaning guests at the ranch can sunbathe at the lower parts of the property and ski at the top, Endsley said. Owners have access to five waterways, including the Dolores River, Calamity Creek and West Creek.
Endsley said Hendricks purchased extensive water rights to irrigate his pastures. Among the wildlife at the ranch are bears, mountain lions, hawks and eagles, not to mention large herds of elk and mule deer.
Endsley said Hendricks, the founder of the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, has reached the extent of his land expeditions and wants to explore something new. To that end, he’s building a yacht that he’ll use to explore the ocean, Endsley said.
“I can imagine if his yacht is going to be anything like this ranch,” Endsley said, “it’s going to be pretty long.”
Hendricks also owns the Gateway Canyons Resort in the town of Gateway, which is not included in the sale.
