The Term Sheet: Startup funding roundup for May

Startups selling speedos, laser technology and paintings that play music claimed a piece of the $45 million pie raised by Colorado startups this May.

That’s according to BusinessDen’s tally of companies that filed Form Ds through the SEC last month. For the purpose of this tally, BusinessDen defines a startup as a company that’s less than 10 years old and excludes funds and real estate ventures.

Colorado companies of all stages brought in $160 million in private offerings in May.

Funding looks roughly flat year over year. BusinessDen reported in May 2016 that startups pocketed $45 million that month.

Here is previous coverage of the companies in this month’s roundup:

  • Wonky retail company Shinesty, which sells party-themed suits and accessories like metallic fanny packs and jean speedos, raised $3.4 million.
  • Fabric technology company Cocona raised nearly $4 million.
  • GrowGeneration raised $2 million to start selling its dirt, fertilizer and lights used in growing pot in the states that have recently legalized pot.
  • Laser tech startup Nuburu raised $5 million.
  • Broomfield-based Soundwall, which creates speaker technology for Bluetooth- and WiFi-enabled artwork, also raised $625,000.
