Floatation therapy is dipping into South Pearl Street.
The 2,000-square-foot Easy Float spa started booking appointments to soak in its soundproof, lightless, saltwater-filled tanks at 1855 S. Pearl St. on Feb. 17.
Owner Bryan Messmer spent 10 months turning the basement storage space – once an unpainted concrete room lit only by fluorescent tubes and a small window – into a laid-back lobby with art gallery lighting turned onto landscape photography and houseplants tucked around a cushy seating arrangement.
“(The basement) was never intended to be a business,” Messmer said. “But it was an opportunity to be on Old South Pearl.”
Messmer said he was the project’s “rookie general contractor,” working off of a design by Intergroup Architects. He estimates building costs were just over $200,000.
The space has four floating tanks, each holding 200 gallons of water and up to 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt, and each with a changing room and shower.
A 90-minute float session costs $60. Members with a two-month commitment pay $45 to float once a month or $70 to float twice a month. An unlimited annual membership is $1,500.
