A multilingual private school in Denver’s Lowry neighborhood has closed on its purchase of a nearby Catholic school’s building.
International School of Denver paid $13.7 million on Friday for the former Bishop Machebeuf High School property at 458 Uinta Way, according to public records. The school took out a $35.7 million loan from SouthState Bank the same day.
The International School, which has stopped at the eighth grade, is adding high school. They will be housed in the Bishop Machebeuf building, which is 75,000 square feet and sits on 10.5 acres.
The two schools said in December that the sale was in the works.
Bishop Machebeuf closed at the end of this past school year and had an enrollment of 180 students. Thirty-six seniors received diplomas May 23, according to an Archdiocese of Denver publication.
The school is being consolidated into St. John Paul the Great Catholic High School, at 2330 S. Sherman St. in Denver. The archdiocese cited financial challenges and declining enrollment for the decision.
The International School opened in 1977 and is located about half a mile to the west. Alexis Wooll, the school’s senior director of advancement, previously told BusinessDen that its 675 students use multiple buildings across 7.5 acres that total 160,000 square feet,
The International School will start using the new property this fall, adding one grade a year until the school runs through the 12th grade. The lower grades will continue to operate where they do now, although “we expect some crossover — particularly for our summer programs,” Wooll previously said.
