One block from the dark and empty former Sports Authority Sports Castle, a new-to-town gear retailer is hustling to finish building its first Colorado store.
Seattle-based gear shop Evo showed off half of its new store at the corner of Broadway and Ninth Avenue this week as the company pushes to finish a $1.5 million renovation project at the former home of Edgeworks and Bicycle Doctor in time for a grand opening next month.
Evo will sell and service skiing, snowboarding, biking and skating gear at its Denver location. Its store at 860 Broadway is Evo’s third brick-and-mortar location and the first outside of Washington and Oregon.
The store is currently open in a renovated space along Ninth Avenue as it rehabilitates a second chunk next door fronting Broadway.
Company founder Bryce Phillips said Colorado is one of the company’s top three states for online sales. Evo jumped into the Denver market last year by acquiring Edgeworks and Bicycle Doctor. Edgeworks/Bicycle Doctor owner Matt Hupperts has stayed on to work at Evo.
Around the same time, Phillips also bought the building Edgeworks worked out of in a partnership with a pair of Denver-based developers. They then renovated the east side of the building and moved into that half before shutting down and demolishing the space Edgeworks worked at on the corner of Ninth and Broadway.
That site is now under construction, and Phillips hopes to have the store stocked and open in about a month.
