Pandemic-borne ice cream maker freezes planned Tennyson shop

Berkeley residents won’t be getting a scoop of Right Cream after all.

The ice cream shop born out of the pandemic decided to not open at 3832 Tennyson St., instead focusing on its first standalone location on South Downing.

“Cost, timing and permitting – just all three things became too difficult to wrap our heads around so we very quickly shifted focus to Downing,” co-owner Joshua Siegel said.

Founded by David Right in 2020, Right Cream signed a lease for the 1,300-square-foot Tennyson location last summer. But after challenges getting it open, Right and Siegel decided to revisit a deal with Denver Beer Co. instead to take over its in-house ice cream operation in south Denver.

“We’re growing and continue to grow, but we’re not going to sign a lease this year,” Siegel said.

Siegel said they moved into the 650-square-foot space at 2423 S. Downing St. in February, which was formerly home to Yum Yum’s Ice Cream. With the new South Downing space, the creamery expanded into walk-in service.

Right started the shop during the pandemic, exclusively offering drop-off and order-pickup orders through Instagram. After gaining popularity, Right Cream moved to a walk-up window in LoDo’s Dairy Block before securing its new space.

“Over time we’ll be doing less pre-orders and more consistent walk-in retail,” Siegel said. “We’re just adjusting the business because we’re not in a global pandemic anymore.”

And instead of trying to grab more real estate, Siegel said Right Cream is growing its presence in the wholesale market. Currently, Right Cream can be found in Blue Pan Pizza, Pizzeria Leopold, and all Mr. B’s liquor stores. Soon, it’ll be in Aviano Coffee shops.

“We’re able now to grow that piece of the business and we’re looking for really good partners,” Siegel said.

Right Cream offers a rotating menu of 10 to 15 flavors for wholesale. At its shop on South Downing, it offers about 12 flavors a week, including non-dairy options, for scoops, sundaes and pre-made pints.

Siegel said the shop also plans to start offering food, more desserts and walk-in specials this year, and will extend its hours during the summer.

Last month, Right Cream raised $150,000, according to an SEC filing. Siegel declined to comment on the raise.

“Coming out of a pandemic is hard because no one has done that, there’s no road map to that,” Siegel said. “Now we’re managing a big business as opposed to a fun little startup, it’s bigger and more challenging, but also more rewarding.”
