Amacon wants to go two for two.
Since last spring, the Canadian development firm has been building a two-tower condo complex at the edge of Denver’s Central Business District. And now, the company wants to construct another similarly designed project on the second half of the block.
In a concept plan submitted to the city Monday, Vancouver-based Amacon proposed two 39-story towers, which would rise from a shared podium, on the 1800 Welton St. and 1925 Broadway lots.
If built as proposed, the structure would be the largest condo building in Denver by the number of units, although different documents give different numbers for the exact count: either 611 or 577. The current No. 1 is the 42-story, 493-unit Spire building at 891 14th St., which was completed in late 2009.
Amacon’s plans also call for 96 hotel rooms as well as 13,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. There would be 731 parking spaces, some underground.
The project that Amacon is building just across the alley, at 519 18th St., also features a shared podium and two towers, one topping out at 38 stories and the other 32. Known to this point as Block 176, the project is being built on 0.68 acres and will have 461 condos.
Amacon expects to complete Block 176 in late 2024, according to previous reporting. As of Monday, crews were still working on the first floor.
Amacon’s interest in developing the second half of the block became public late last year, when BusinessDen reported that the company had paid $4.7 million for 1800 Welton St., where 7-Eleven operates.
Mark Sheldon, a local executive with Amacon, said at the time the company was interested in also buying the adjacent 1925 Broadway parcel, which is a parking lot. A purchase has yet to occur. The total site is about 1 acre.
Sheldon and another Amacon representative didn’t respond to requests for comment Monday. Plans for the second complex were drawn up by Davis Partnership Architects.
