The Denver-based retailer of backpacks and outdoor apparel recently signed a seven-year lease for 7,000 square feet at York Street Yards in Denver’s Clayton neighborhood, CEO Matt Williams told BusinessDen.

About 5,000 square feet will become Topo’s first office since the early days of the pandemic. The other 2,000 will be for a storefront for its bags, hats and clothing.

It will be Topo’s fourth location in Denver and 12th overall, Williams said. He expects both to open in the spring, so long as construction goes smoothly at 3869 N. Steele St.

“It’s going to be the office that Topo deserves,” he said. “This brand is awesome and it deserves a place to call home that we’re proud of.”

The company hasn’t had office space since its lease for a RiNo space lapsed during COVID. Recently, Williams said his team has been gathering at Topo’s warehouse off Interstate 70 and Monaco in Denver.

But he wanted an official spot for his team to come to that could house retail, too. Williams said the new office will also have Topo’s creative studio and a room to showcase new products to the brand’s wholesale accounts, both national and local.

Williams said he likes the location of York Street Yards, which is home to other notable brands, including Rivian and Kokopelli/RovR

“We wanted to plant a flag and make sure Denver is our home,” Williams said.

Topo’s 35 corporate employees will work out of the office, which can accommodate 50 people, Williams said. He expects Topo to get to that number in the next five to seven years, mainly by adding to the marketing and product teams.

Williams started at Topo in 2019, serving as chief operating officer. He was promoted to CEO in 2023. He said Topo has seen rapid growth through expanding both its retail operations and wholesale business, working with retailers such as REI, Scheels and Backcountry. In the past two years, the international side has grown.

Williams declined to disclose Topo’s revenue, but said it’s a profitable, seven-figure business with 30% growth over the past six years. About 70% of revenue is direct-to-consumer through its own stores and website, and the other 30% comes from wholesale.

“Now that we’ve built this omnichannel revenue mix, the goal, the tide that’s going to lift all boats, is brand,” Williams said. “Just the effort and spending on content to keep building up the brand.”
