Starbucks is cutting back.
The Seattle-based chain closed nine cafés across the Denver metro area in recent days, including one in REI’s Denver flagship store at 1416 Platte St. and two in downtown office towers — at 1670 Broadway St. and 1900 16th St.
It’s part of a wave of closures across the country. Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol announced last week that the company’s North American store footprint would shrink by 1% this year.
“We identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance, and these locations will be closed,” he wrote.
Here are the nine Denver metro stores that closed, as first reported by 9News.
- Denver: 1670 Broadway St.
- Denver: 1900 16th St.
- Denver: 1416 Platte St. (REI)
- Denver: 2975 E. Colfax Ave.
- Denver: 5074 E. Hampden Ave.
- Denver: 4505 Peoria St.
- Aurora: 2300 S. Parker Road
- Centennial: 6712 S. Potomac St.
- Englewood: 4298 S. Broadway
Starbucks also closed a spot at the corner of Sixth Avenue and South Broadway earlier this month, though it is unclear whether that was part of this store closure wave. A spokeswoman for the company declined to address specifics.
REI, which owns the real estate for its flagship store, did not respond to a request for comment on the future of the Starbucks space.
