Changes are coming to the 2500 block of 15th Street in LoHi.

A new yoga studio is joining the neighborhood, while a stretch of retail closes next door.

Emily Masters is opening Canopy Yoga at 2525 15th St. this summer. Masters bought the 1,298 square feet space in 2022 for $573,500, according to property records.

“We looked into leasing and we just didn’t like the terms of the contracts being given,” Masters said.

The Australian native moved to LoHi with her husband five years ago and was looking for a local community spot to practice yoga. When she didn’t find the right fit, Masters decided to start her own studio.

Masters is redoing the space, which was previously a hair salon. She said Canopy will have an upstairs juice bar and space for people to hang out before or after classes.

“It’s about a whole mind-body experience from when you enter the space to when you leave,” she said. “A lot of people move to Denver and it’s hard to find friends, find community. I wanted to provide that base and community for people.”

Before starting Canopy, Masters worked in banking. The 35-year-old has been practicing yoga for about 12 years, and was an instructor in her spare time. She said Canopy will have about 10 instructors and offer classes such as Vinyasa and prenatal yoga.

While Canopy is saying hello to the neighborhood, just down the street The Highland Home by Candyl is saying goodbye.

Owner John Merrifield said he’s closing his homegoods and aromatherapy store at 2501 15th St. at the end of the month, although his products will still be available online and in 250 stores around the country.

Candyl makes reusable “candles” that use essential oils instead of burning wax, which Merrifield said is safer but still looks like a traditional candle. The storefront also sells other home decor items.

The 34-year-old opened the shop two years ago, and said business is thriving, but he has to close because the property owner is looking to sell the building. He said he looked at reopening somewhere else, or even buying his current real estate, but it didn’t make financial sense.

“My product is very visual. It’s better to see in person and also essential oils so there’s smells associated,” he said. “I like having a retail presence. It allows me to interact with customers … so I could see opening another one in the future, but that’s not something immediate.”

Merrifield said it’s his understanding that the chiropractor next door will also close for the same reason.

“There’s a lot of change going on and I’m just happy that I was able to be a part of it,” Merrifield said.
