The new owner of an Englewood-based apparel company is shutting its facility there and moving manufacturing elsewhere.

Ouray Sportswear President Connor Knutson informed the Colorado labor department last week that 154 employees will be let go as the company closes its facility at 1201 W. Mansfield Ave. in Englewood.

The employees will likely be let go between Oct. 17 and the end of the year.

Ouray Sportswear was founded as Ski Country Imports in 1965. The firm evolved to design and distribute custom casual apparel and headwear, with some 4,000 wholesale customers including those in the collegiate, golf and resort sectors, according to its website.

Knutson told BusinessDen the closure was an “economic decision made by a larger ownership group.” Ouray Sportswear and another brand called Locale Outdoor, which Ouray bought in 2021, were acquired in January by Pennsylvania-based L2 Brands. In turn, Sentinel Capital Partners owns L2, a private equity firm based in New York, owns L2.

Knutson said the Ouray and Locale brands will continue, but production will be consolidated into existing L2 facilities in Pennsylvania and El Salvador.

Knutson said he’s been with Ouray Sports for seven years, serving as president for the last five. Ouray has sold to four different buyers during that time, he said.

“There’s a bit of a rollup in the apparel industry, especially in the distribution market,” he said.

Ouray’s facility in Englewood is 114,000 square feet, according to the company’s website. Boulder-based Conscience Bay Co. bought the property  as part of a $21 million deal that also included other nearby parcels, records show.

Ouray will seek to sublet the space, Knutson said.
