Colorado Athletic Club is closing two locations, including one by Union Station in downtown Denver.
The Wellbridge Co., the Greenwood Village-based parent company of the fitness center chain, said this week that its locations at 1601 Wewatta St. downtown and 374 Inverness Parkway in the Denver Tech Center will close at 7 p.m. on Aug. 31.
“The COVID pandemic, combined with rising costs and staff shortages, has hit the fitness club industry hard across the country, the Colorado Athletic Clubs are no exception,” Wellbridge CEO Ed Williams said in a statement. “Our teammates have worked hard to keep all locations open, however we are unable to find a long-term solution to serve our members to our standards without these closures.”
The company has worked out deals with its landlords to terminate leases for both spaces, a spokesman said. The downtown location, which opened in early 2016, is 38,000 square feet. The Inverness location, which opened in 1983, is 115,000 square feet.
Those working out at the two clubs can transfer their membership to another location. The closures will leave Colorado Athletic Club with five locations, including in the Tabor Center downtown and at 5555 DTC Parkway in the DTC.
The closures are the first for Colorado Athletic Club since late 2016, when a location at 1630 Welton St. downtown shuttered.
Wellbridge also operates fitness centers under different names in Maryland and New Mexico, according to its website.
