A former Kmart building in Thornton has a new owner.
An entity associated with Michigan-based Gordon Food Service purchased the 192,532-square-foot building on 23 acres at 1400 E. 104th Ave. this month for $16.5 million, according to public records.
Gordon Food Service, a 125-year-old firm, is a restaurant distributor that also operates grocerylike stores open to the public. The company has 25 distribution centers and 175 stores, according to its website.
None are in Colorado. But Gordon has been in expansion mode this year, opening six new Texas stores and acquiring Canada-based Macgregors Meat & Seafood, according to press releases.
A Gordon spokesperson declined to comment on the Thornton buy.
The Thornton building is partially occupied by Utah-based Vasa Fitness, which started leasing space in 2018 and has about 52,000 square feet.
The rest of the building used to be a Kmart store, which closed in 2016. Sears Holdings, the parent company of Kmart and Sears, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018 and scaled back its brick-and-mortar presence. Like many other states, Colorado saw all of its Kmarts close.
Records show the property was sold by New York-based Seritage, which was formed in 2015 to acquire Sears Holdings’ real estate and lease stores back to the company.
Seritage also sold a former Sears in Lakewood late last year.
