Wix, a tech company that helps users build websites, is laying off 62 Denver employees as part of companywide cuts.

The Israeli company told the state in a Feb. 15 letter that layoffs in Denver and three other U.S. cities where the company has an office — Austin, Miami and San Francisco — will take effect April 16.

Idit Carmon, Wix’s United States human resources head, attributed the cuts in the letter only to “unforeseen business circumstances.” Wix didn’t respond to a request for additional comment. Numerous tech companies have cut staff in recent months.

The letter indicated that 331 employees are being cut across the four offices: 142 in Miami, 100 in Austin, 62 in Denver and 27 in San Francisco. But Israeli business news site Globes, citing a memo from Wix President Nir Zohar, reported the cuts actually went beyond that, affecting 370 employees in total. Wix also laid off 100 people in August, per Globes.

Wix’s Denver office is in the Tabor Center at 1200 17th St. Plans for the office were announced in July 2020 by Gov. Jared Polis and the state’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade. Wix said at the time it expected the office to eventually have more than 200 employees.

Alissa Johnson, a spokeswoman for the economic development office, told BusinessDen Thursday that Wix didn’t receive any state incentives in connection with the Denver office opening.

Wix’s stock price peaked in February 2021 at about $350. Shares have declined 75 percent since then. The stock closed Thursday at $86.56, down about 4.5 percent on news of the cuts and in advance of the company’s fourth-quarter earnings release next week.
