A company that makes covers for automobile seats is closing its Aurora facility and laying off staff.

The shuttering of the GT Covers facility at 13450 E. Smith Road affects 49 people, 44 of whom will be cut in an initial round of layoffs slated to start around April 14, according to a letter that parent company Covercraft Industries  sent to the state by parent company Covercraft Industries.

Oklahoma-based Covercraft also makes other protective accessories for vehicles, such as pet pads, barriers and covers that fit over the entire vehicle. GT covers was started in 1982 and acquired by Covercraft in 2017.

The letter did not give a reason for the plant closure. The company didn’t respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

The company notified the state in an effort to comply with the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires large employers to provide advance notice of plant closings and significant layoffs.

Other companies that have informed the state of layoffs this year include British apparel firm GymShark, California-based Specialized Bicycles and lighting manufacturer Pinnacle Architectural Lighting.
