Epic Brewing Co. is shuttering its RiNo brewery and taproom, and plans indicate the Walnut Street property will be redeveloped for a new restaurant.
Epic Marketing Manager Gus Erickson confirmed to BusinessDen Tuesday that the company, which also has a Salt Lake City location, will close up shop at 3001 Walnut St.
Erickson said on a phone call that he couldn’t immediately speak to the timing of the closure or what prompted the decision. He didn’t respond to a follow-up email.
Epic has operated in RiNo since 2013, according to the company’s website. Epic was founded in Utah three years earlier.
News of the pending closure comes about four months after the sale of the property Epic occupies.
Denver 3001 Walnut LLC paid $6.5 million in July to buy the property from 3001 EBWalnut LLC, which purchased it in 2014 for $3 million, according to public records. The 0.57-acre lot has about 18,000 square feet of building space on it, records show.
Epic co-founder Peter Erickson listed himself as manager of the entity that sold the property in July, although Gus Erickson told BusinessDen at the time that Epic itself had always been a tenant.
Attempts to reach an individual involved with the property’s new ownership entity have been unsuccessful. Documents submitted to the city in September, however, indicate a potential future for the property.
The concept plan, an early-stage development proposal, calls for some additions to the existing structures on the lot, and for the property to be converted to restaurant use. A floor plan shows an indoor and outdoor bar, an indoor dining area and a large outdoor event area.
The cover page of the document says “The Rustic” in large print, potentially in reference to the name of the planned restaurant. A company that operates four restaurant and music venues in Texas by that name didn’t respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
