An Arizona-based restaurant group is next on deck after a Cap Hill eatery closed after a quarter century.

The Deck, a new taphouse and restaurant, opened in place of Park Tavern at 931 E. 11th Ave. in mid-September. The latter, which had been in operation since 1996, closed on July 15.

“I had had enough of the industry,” Park Tavern owner Lou Belegratis said. “Restaurants are a tough business these days.”

The Deck is owned by Phoenix-based MAC Entertainment Group, which recently took over operations for two other local spots: Tivoli Tap House on the Auraria Campus and The DNVR Bar in City Park West. It has since formed a local restaurant group called The X Group.

“The space and the rooftop patio really inspired the brand,” MAC Entertainment Group Vice President Katie Larson said of The Deck. “Being from Arizona, we have super warm weather year-round and you never want to get that close to the sun. But it’s so much nicer in Denver. We wanted to capitalize on that with a nice rooftop deck, hence the name, and create a welcoming neighborhood bar.”

The Deck serves items like hot chicken sandwiches, burgers, a poke flight and elote dip, as well as a variety of on-tap beers and cocktails. It also offers brunch Saturday through Monday.

“We kept a lot of the old Park Tavern employees because we didn’t want to take anyone’s livelihoods away, and they suggested we open for brunch on Monday to cater to the industry crowd that usually has the day off,” Larson said.

In late October, The Deck will open up its 1,000-square-foot rooftop patio after completing renovations. It will feature a brick oven for pizza during happy hours and a spot for live music.

MAC Entertainment Group, founded last year, has an ownership stake in three other restaurants in Arizona, Larson said.

The company took over operations at The DNVR Bar — which is home base for a local sports media outlet — from Denver-based Little Pub Co. Larson said the company has added 15 TVs and updated the menu. The Tivoli Tap House, meanwhile, was previously managed by the brewery.
