It was an easy choice for Mike Fogarty to open his first 24/7 convenience store near the University of Denver.

The owner of Choice Market is getting ready to launch his fourth location at 1737 E. Evans Ave. in the University neighborhood this summer. He signed a lease for the 3,800-square-foot space earlier this month.
“It was a natural fit,” Fogarty said. “We’ve been wanting to get outside of Denver’s true urban core and extend our delivery radius down south. This store will give us the opportunity to tap into that market of students and higher income neighborhoods surrounding the area.”
Fogarty opened Choice Market’s first location at 1770 N. Broadway in Cap Hill in 2017 and has since added a location with gas pumps at 2200 E. Colfax Ave. in Cheesman Park and another at 939 Bannock St. on the ground floor of the Parq on Speer apartment building in the Golden Triangle.
Like the other locations, Choice’s new DU store will sell basic groceries, local craft beer, hot and cold grab-and-go meals and more. It will also feature the “frictionless technology” that was first introduced at Fogarty’s Golden Triangle location.
Using the frictionless technology, customers enter payment information into an app before entering the store. When they’re done shopping, they just walk out. Hundreds of ceiling cameras and shelf sensors determine what customers have selected to buy, and minutes later, an e-receipt appears on their phone.
Choice Market’s new DU location, which will be open 24/7, will serve all the same groceries, hot and cold grab-n-go items and snacks as its other locations.
Choice Market’s new location will have a separate turnstile entrance to allow the store to operate 24/7, rather than closing at 11 p.m., like the other locations. A cashier will be present up until then for regular checkout, but customers who wish to purchase items throughout the night will check out using the app or a mobile credit card at the turnstiles.
“Technology is convenient, so why not have it in a convenience store?,” Fogarty said. “Our customers really enjoy the convenience to order what they want when they want. And we’ve also been able to understand who the Choice customer is, which are predominantly female customers with higher disposable incomes, and that has really set us apart from the competition.”
Fogarty plans to add the turnstile entrances to all of his locations and eventually open them 24/7.
The Choice Market owner is also opening a smaller format location that will be fully cashierless in the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in August, he said. And he is under contract for another location with fuel pumps and electric car chargers in Parker.
