Cajun restaurant buys property in West Highland

Sassafras American Eatery is now its own landlord.

The local Southern-influenced brunch restaurant purchased its West Highland real estate at 3927 W. 32nd Ave. last week for $2.18 million, according to Lee & Associates brokers Brian Cox and Steve Suechting, who represented the buyer.

Sassafras has operated at the site since March 2019, after closing its original location in Jefferson Park. Co-owners Julia Sherman and Richard Stewert did not respond to a request for comment.

The property was sold by Chef Mark Ferguson, who operated fine-dining small bites concept Solitaire in the 5,451-square-foot building from 2015 to 2018. Acting as JLF3362 LLC, he purchased the property in 2013 for $667,000, records show.

Brokers Kelly Greene with Legend Partners and Peter Peluso with Pinnacle represented the seller. The building was listed for $2.3 million earlier this year.

Sassafras, which first opened in Jefferson Park in 2012, is known for its Cajun-style menu with fried green tomato Benedicts, pimento chicken biscuits, shrimp and grits and po’boys with shrimp, catfish or oysters.

It has another location in Golden, which opened in 2017. A former location along Colfax in Cap Hill is now Exile Kitchen.
