Sweet Action Ice Cream is ringing in 2020 under new ownership.
Frozen Matter, the ice cream shop that opened in Uptown in 2016 and Wash Park last year, acquired the business at 52 N. Broadway on Jan. 1 for an undisclosed amount.
Frozen Matter owners Josh Gertzen and Gerry Kim said they were looking to open a third location prior to learning that Sweet Action founders Sam Kopicko and Chia Basinger were looking to exit the business. Discussions between the two parties began late last summer.
Founded in March 2009, Sweet Action serves dairy and vegan ice cream, with flavors ranging from Stranahan’s Whiskey Brickle to Vegan Horchata. Kim said the company has 1,000 recipes.
“Sweet Action was the place I used to go get ice cream before we were in the ice cream business,” Kim said.

Gertzen and Kim, who learned how to make ice cream through a course at Penn State, have expanded Sweet Action’s hours a bit on each end — it’s now open noon to midnight — but otherwise don’t plan immediate drastic changes.
“Sweet Action has developed quite a following and we don’t want to be rash,” Kim said. “The goal would be for the three parlors to have uniformity at some time. It probably won’t happen in 2020 but will happen in the future.”
Down the road, Frozen Matter will make mix-ins that Sweet Action offers, which aren’t currently made in-house. Kim said Sweet Action eventually will start serving homemade custard, as Frozen Matter does now.
“Ideally we’d like to take the best of what they have and what we have for the future,” Kim said.
Future plans also include new menu options, including brownies at Sweet Action, and CBD ice cream floats and sodas at Frozen Matter, Kim said.
Gertzen and Kim also plan to grow Sweet Action’s grocery store presence. The brand’s ice cream can be found at Natural Grocers, King Soopers and Whole Foods, as well as the South Broadway store.
