A Rhode Island-based company wants to build a 14-story hotel on a parking lot two blocks from the 16th Street Mall.
Magna Hospitality Group, which operates more than 20 hotels, is proposing the addition at 822 18th St. in Denver. The company did not reveal the hotel’s brand.
Joan Heidenheimer Travis has owned the 0.29-acre corner lot for decades, according to city records. It is on the same block as Residence Inn Denver City Center and Kimpton Hotel Monaco, and a short walk from numerous other hotels.
The proposed structure would have 144,028 square feet of hotel/lodging space and 3,500 square feet of restaurant space, according to a site-development plan submitted to the city this week.
The project would not include any parking spaces, according to the 13-page plan, which doesn’t specify how many hotel rooms the building would have.
The plan bears the name of Chris Morosetti, chief investment officer at Magna. A woman who answered the phone at Magna’s office said Morosetti doesn’t talk to reporters, and that no one else at the company was available for comment.
“We don’t comment on anything,” she said.
Architect Tobias Strohe, of Johnson Nathan Strohe, submitted the plan to the city on behalf of Magna. He did not respond to a request for comment.
Magna’s website said the firm is “dedicated exclusively to hospitality investment, development and management.” The firm says it owns or operates more than 4,500 rooms, and operates or is approved to operate properties under the Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, Starwood and Intercontinental Hotel Group brands.
Magna isn’t new to the Denver market. The firm paid $27.43 million in December 2016 for the Hampton Inn & Suites at 1845 Sherman St.
