Denver’s electric tuk tuk company is puttering into Portland, Oregon.
ETuk Ride, an electric shuttle touring company based in Denver, is expanding outside Colorado. The firm plans to push into Portland by the end of summer.
“Portland’s a very dynamic city, an exploding city, and has a huge beer scene,” said Lewis Davis, the general manager. “At the same time, the touring business is still tremendously open.”
Inspired by the three-wheeled rickshaws popular in the developing world, ETuk USA CEO and co-founder Walid Mourtada brought electric tuk tuks to Denver in 2015.
Since then, ETuk USA has been manufacturing the shuttles in River North and said it has around 160 vehicles in 32 states. The vehicles start at $20,000.
Last year, ETuk USA’s ownership launched a separate sister company, ETuk Ride, as a Denver-area touring service offering sightseeing, brewery tours, scavenger hunts and more.
Davis said six months into 2018, it already has surpassed its 2017 bookings.
Customers can find tours directly on ETuk Ride’s website (www.etukride.com) for around $60 per person. Private and corporate events usually cost more.
Most of ETuk Ride’s Portland costs will be for buying vehicles from ETuk USA.
ETuk Ride plans to start its Portland operation with two electric shuttles and hopes to reach between six and 10 on the streets.
Part of what made Portland appealing to ETuk Ride is the business culture. Like Denver, Portland has had a recent jump in companies hiring. In Denver, Davis said ETuk Ride’s growth has been fueled largely by companies moving to the city and through local conventions.
