Walgreens, the new owner of nearly 2,000 Rite Aid locations nationwide, has decided the 16th Street Mall in Denver didn’t need two of its pharmacies across the street from each other.

The pharmacy chain is closing the Rite Aid at 750 16th St., on the corner of Stout Street. Its last day of operation will be May 15, followed by a two-week sale of all remaining items in the store.

The closure comes on the heels of Walgreens purchasing 1,932 Rite Aid locations. Walgreens spokesman Phil Caruso said current pharmacy customers will find their prescriptions transferred to the Walgreens caddy-corner to the current Rite Aid at 801 16th St.

Other recent shakeups on the 16th Street Mall include the addition of Chicago-based deep dish pizza restaurant Giordano’s at 1600 California St. and PokeWorld at 110 16th St. Fitness chain Planet Fitness also took space above Walgreens last year.

Other Rite Aid closures in the metro area include the location at 11907 W. Alameda Parkway, which is shutting down May 30.
