Investors going nuts for locally grown snack maker

The sleepy mountain town of Salida can brag about one of the biggest retail capital raises of the year.

Snack brand Don’t Go Nuts, under the Pinto Barn Inc. corporate name, this week raised $5.3 million to expand its nut-free snack arsenal.

The company raised the funds starting Dec. 31, according SEC documents filed Jan. 19.

Pinto Barn sells peanut-, tree nut- and gluten-free snacks for children through its Don’t Go Nuts brand. Its products include snack bars and spreads.

The snack company expanded its distribution network to include 30 Costco stores in Los Angeles and Hawaii, marketing director Leslie Kemp said. There are 18 stores in Colorado selling Don’t Go Nuts products listed on the site. It also sells its products online on Amazon and its own site.

After a $2 million raise in August, Jane Pinto said Don’t Go Nuts was looking to expand its product line. She said she was also hoping to add equipment to its facility in Salida, and triple sales growth in 2018.

The Don’t Go Nuts warehouse space in Salida is 10,000 square feet and includes a dusting room to ensure products do not contain nuts.

Pinto started the company in 2012 along with her husband after their daughter had two allergic reactions to tree nuts.
