A family is sharing its southern soul food recipes with Lakewood this weekend.
The Soul Kitchen is opening a second location on Saturday near Wadsworth Boulevard and West First Avenue.
The shop at 98 Wadsworth Blvd. was formerly a Lenny’s Sub Shop. The 2,600-square-foot store is double the size of the original and can seat 66 people.
Without past experience in the restaurant industry, son and mother Jonathan Berry Jr. and Karen Warren opened the first Soul Kitchen on East Colfax Avenue in Aurora in summer 2012.
The menu is made from the family’s own recipes, and reflects its origins in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Jennings, Louisiana.
“It’s been around in the family for so long. We wanted to see if we could capitalize on it,” Berry said.
Warren said the bestselling item on the menu is catfish with two sides, which costs $14.
Both co-owners kept their day jobs. Berry works as an accountant and Warren works at a home health company.
Following customer’s comments from the original location, The Soul Kitchen 2 will feature a full bar.
The new restaurant cost about $100,000 to open. Berry is funding the project with personal savings.
