Architecture firm DLR Group planned to stay in LoDo. But the firm needed to double its workspace as the staff grew through the years.
The Denver branch of the national architecture firm, which opened a location in Denver in 2007, moved to a new suite at 1401 Lawrence St. over the Fourth of July break. The company had outgrown 6,800 square feet in the SugarCube building at 1555 Blake St.
Bob Binder, a principal with the Denver office, said that after surveying employees, the company knew that most DLR workers wanted to stay in LoDo.
“We became landlocked (at the SugarCube). We would have loved to stay there, but there was no more real estate so we kept densifying, and it was impacting our workflow and employee wellness,” Binder said.
The company is designing the 15,000 square-foot-space on Lawrence Street, and chose to do so in order to show potential clients an example of its work in addition to having examples of materials that clients can see and touch.
“We want to demonstrate to our clients that we can walk the walk, not just talk,” Binder said.
The DLR Group designed The Denver Post’s current home at 101 W. Colfax Ave. The company also designed the LoDo Denver Lifestyle Hotel, which will be built at the Market Street Station location on the 16th Street Mall.
DLR’s Denver office started with 15 employees and now has 50, Binder said.
The company first opened in Denver at 16th and Wynkoop streets, but moved out of the area after Union Station development raised prices.
DLR has offices across the United States, including in Colorado Springs. The firm opened in Colorado in 1989.
