The country’s biggest used car dealer is getting ready to park itself in Golden.

CarMax is eyeing a new location near Sixth Avenue and Interstate 70. A company spokesman said the firm typically invests between $10 million and $25 million in each new location, and that Golden’s location would be a smaller store with 10 to 15 employees.

The used car giant has filed development plans with the city for a new lot on 5½ acres at 16500 W. Colfax Ave. The development would include a sales and service office, display lot and visitor parking lot.

Alejandro Topelson is the current owner of the lot Carmax plans to build on, according to Jefferson County real estate records.

Plans show a single building on the 5-acre lot measuring about 7,500 square feet. A blueprint for the site also shows about 125 parking spots for customers and employees, with another 250 spaces to park for-sale cars. Each CarMax store tends to keep between 200 and 400 cars on the lot.

CarMax would not comment on when the new store might open, noting it can take a couple of years to get approvals, complete construction and open for business. A company spokesman said CarMax typically announces approximate opening dates a year ahead of time.

CarMax, based in Richmond, Virginia, currently operates more than 160 stores in 38 states. In Colorado the company already has five locations in Loveland, Parker, Littleton and Federal Heights.
