Denver barkeep Greg Gallagher is planning a new outfit on Broadway St. that adult store The Crypt vacated last year. Gallagher will call the spot (located at 8 Broadway) Graphic and plans to open the beer-centered, drinks-only hangout by next summer.
Gallagher, who also owns the Front Porch, Gaslamp and Roosevelt bars, was keeping an eye out for a fourth location when a friend tipped him off on the 3,100-square-foot storefront.
“One of our buddies is the owner of Baker Wine and Spirits, and he had been telling us that we need to check out Broadway,” he said. “We’ve always been looking for new avenues and places to look and he mentioned he saw a vacancy driving home at the old Crypt location.”
Graphic will take up 3,100 square feet at 8 Broadway, sandwiched between a self-storage facility and the former Walnut Room pizzeria. Gallagher signed a 10-year lease on the space with another 10-year option.
Beer will be the big draw at Graphic. Gallagher is planning about 25 draught taps and stocking another 40 or 60 beers in cans and bottles, as well as some cocktail ingredients. He doesn’t plan on having a food menu when the restaurant opens. Graphic will also have a limited cocktail menu.
“All of our staff will be trained at the Roosevelt, so they understand the proper way to make an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan,” he said. “We’re not going for the craft cocktail bar, but if someone is looking for it we’ll be set and prepared to make it.”
For décor, Gallagher wants Graphic to look like its own under-roof outdoor courtyard, with bi-fold doors that open off of Broadway. He’s also planning some sort of reclaimed brick for the walls and the floors with a mural by artist Jaime Molina on one of the walls.
“Say you went to someone’s New York City brownstone that has been in the family for generations,” he said. “And then 30 years ago they bought the brownstone behind and knocked it out to create this courtyard kind of feel.”
Gallagher has just started the permitting process and he’s aiming for a June or July opening. Davis Partnership is designing the space and Henderson Construction will handle renovations. BBVA Compass is providing financing for the project.
Gallagher, 39, started his Denver bar empire in 2004 when he opened The Front Porch at 15th and Lawrence streets downtown. He added Gaslamp on Market Street in 2009 and Roosevelt right next to The Front Porch in 2013.
Graphic is moving into 8 Broadway about a year after The Crypt was seized because of unpaid taxes. AXIO Commercial Real Estate’s John Livaditis represented the landlord in Graphic’s lease. He’s also working on backfilling The Walnut Room, a pizza place next door that closed its Broadway location late this summer.

I’m curious, how can GRAPHIC be called a restaurant if wont have any food on the menu? I find this article about ANOTHER bar on broadway confusing…..
