A Denver trial law firm is moving up from the 10th to the 14th floor of its downtown office tower.
Recht Kornfeld, which has criminal defense, civil litigation and government compliance practices, will take over the entire 14th floor at 1600 Stout St.
Shareholder Rick Kornfeld said that the firm will expand from 10 to 13 full-time employees and wanted room to grow when its current leased expired soon. The move is slated for November 1.
“We’re still lean and mean, but we’re growing,” Kornfield said. The firm added Marnie Adams as an associate in August and recently hired Abe Hutt as a partner.
The firm’s real estate broker, Trent Rice of Shames Makovsky, explored space in other downtown offices, Kornfeld said. But in the end, the firm returned to where it started.
“We wanted not only to be downtown but, given our state and federal practices, the proximity to the courts,” Kornfeld said. “We really like our location even though the super hip location is down to the east.”
Kornfeld said the firm also likes the 9,500-square-foot office at 1600 Stout because it keeps overhead low compared to more expensive office space around Union Station. The new office will also afford Recht Kornfeld the trappings of a bigger firm, Kornfelt said, like an entryway with their logo as soon as clients land on their floor.
“We’re not doing this on the cheap – we’re not in a small office share in City Park or something,” said Kornfeld. “When you have the whole floor, the elevators open and you’re in our space.”
The firm also saves money by keeping headcount low.
“We don’t have a lot of associates. In our practice area, people generally hire the person they want to hire,” Kornfeld said. “They don’t want to hire me and then not work with me.”
The firm is also adding Abe Hutt as a partner. Hutt received his law degree from the University of Southern California and has practiced in Denver since 1984. He will bring an investigator and a staff member to Recht Kornfeld from his solo practice, which he started in 1995.
Two solo practitioners that have long shared an office with the firm, Dale Gaar and Brian Fahsalt, will also join Recht Kornfeld on the 14th floor.
The new office is being renovated by RNL Design, which also designed the firm’s current office.
