190 jobs departing DIA

Most of the DIA layoffs include workers in customer service and baggage handling.

A Zurich-based ground and cargo handling company is cutting 187 jobs at Denver International Airport.

Swissport, which contracts with airlines at DIA for ground handling services like ticketing, baggage and aircraft loading, wrote in a letter to the state that the cuts are due to a “significant loss of business.”

Swissport said a customer “sent us the notification” at the end of July and that cuts will start September 16.

Layoffs will affect 78 ramp agents and baggage handlers and 63 customer service agents, according to the letter. The remaining positions include supervisors and mechanics. All positions are full-time.

According to its website, Swissport has operated at DIA since 2006 and has 600 employees there.

The company did not immediately return messages from BusinessDen seeking comment.

This is not the first staffing contract shuffle at DIA in recent memory.

Spirit Airlines broke its contract with a staffing agency owned by Delta in June and said it would switch to Swissport, saying it made the change in part because Swissport has more workers in Denver.

At the time, Delta subsidiary DAL Global Services announced it would cut 104 jobs, most of them ramp agents – the workers that guide aircraft, unload cargo and ready them for takeoff again.

Frontier Airlines has also contracted with Swissport. Frontier cut 1,160 jobs in Denver in January 2015, outsourcing some of those positions to Swissport.
