In the wee hours of Jan. 3, a burglar clad in sunglasses and headphones broke into Old South Pearl’s Kaos Pizzeria and left with $1,000 cash. And to help catch the perpetrator, owner Patrick Mangold-White is ponying up a large reward – in pizza.
“If someone can give us information about (the thief), I want to get to know them better,” Mangold-White said. “Cash isn’t something that’s going to bring them back and build rapport. We thought it would be better to entice them to come back and make them part of our community.”
Mangold-White is offering a year’s worth of free pizza to anyone whose tip helps catch the thief – that’s $8,000 in premium pizza if the tipster can put down one large prosciutto pie per day. And if you’re that dedicated, Mangold-White said he has no problem serving slices seven days a week.
“There’s no limit, they can come in every day,” he said.

Detective Mark Matthews of the Denver Police Department is investigating the heist. He said authorities have identified a possible suspect and are working to confirm his identity.
“It’s not a typical burglar – he spent a lot of time in there,” Matthews said. “He was very casual and cavalier about it. He spent 30 minutes inside the business instead of smashing, grabbing and getting out.”
Matthews said there have been burglaries at other South Pearl Street businesses but couldn’t confirm if those are related to the Kaos Pizzeria break-in.
Thieves have picked Kaos’ property before, but the only things stolen were outdoor art pieces and sculptures, Mangold-White said. Prior to the break-in, the store’s interior had never been burgled.
Mangold-White, 49, is a Denver native and self-taught chef who opened Kaos in 2009. He also owns three other restaurants in town: Gaia Bistro and Uno Mas on South Pearl and Mas Kaos on Tennyson Street, which opens in February.
“We’ll be serving artisan-style pizza and elevated street tacos together in one space,” Mangold-White said of Mas Kaos. “It’s a combination of my other restaurants rolled into one with the brewery aspect.”
