A Colorado nonprofit is firing up a $4 million expansion at its Jefferson County office.
Easter Seals Colorado, which provides services to people with mental disabilities, seniors and children, is more than doubling the size of its Lakewood facility at 5755 W. Alameda Ave. The nonprofit plans to add 10,000 square feet to the 7,500 square feet it currently occupies. The additional space will allow Easter Seals to add new programs and expand some of its existing ones.
“We’re now in the process of talking to city planning and getting input from staff,” said Lynn Robinson, president and CEO of Easter Seals Colorado.
The expansion, expected to begin in late fall, will allow the organization to grow all of its current programs and add a program for children with complex disabilities, as well as a caregiver program. It will hire between 50 and 100 more people to staff the expanded facility.
The organization began searching for more space about two years ago. Robinson said it was looking to buy a building in Aurora, but property there proved too expensive.
“There were several financial brick walls,” she said.
Easter Seals, founded in 1919, has locations throughout the country. It offers services for children and adults with autism and other disabilities, as well as senior, rehabilitation and respite services. Easter Seals Colorado serves about 8,000 people each year, Robinson said.
Robinson estimated the additions could help the organization reach 500-800 more people.
“It could be as many as a thousand,” she said.
The expanded facility will also provide enough space for its adult day care program, which currently operates in a different location.
“It will allow us to bring them back in house,” Robinson said. “We’re also potentially adding some additional senior programs.”
Easter Seals will renovate its current facility while adding to it. The entire project will take 14-18 months to complete, Robinson said.
