Members at a Morrison country club now have twice as much space for unwinding after a day on the links.
Red Rocks Country Club finished a $4.2 million project to double the size of its clubhouse and add a bar, outdoor patio and larger event space.
“With all the different member leagues, clubs, events and activities, a 13,000-square-foot clubhouse didn’t meet the needs of the members,” General Manager Mark Condon said. “I think that the growth in popularity of family clubs as we go into 2016 is a huge trend in golf.”
Improvements to the two-story clubhouse, located at 16235 W. Bellview Ave. in Morrison, include a card room, meeting room, expanded kitchen, a 90-seat bar and redesigned dining room.
“We pretty much just took the building down to the bones and then just rebuilt it,” Condon said.
The club’s members – who function as owners and directors of the 501(c)7 nonprofit club – conducted focus group discussions and surveys to see what improvements were needed most.
The club hired architect and contractor Hyder Construction to design and renovate the clubhouse.
Red Rocks Country Club has a maximum of 625 members – 425 golfing and 200 non-golfing. While country clubs of old mainly drew membership from older male golfers, recent years have seen changes in that trend.
“Most of the people here have young families. There are a lot of people retiring at a younger age – people are now calling it good in their mid- or late-50s,” Condon said. “Those people are looking for a lifestyle center, and we fill the need for that demographic, as well.”
Condon said the updated structure will help entice new members.
“As you look at the people that come out here and the new building, member interest is really high,” he said. “We’re definitely going to pick up more members.”
Aside from golf, the club also offers swimming, dinner parties, concerts and fitness and yoga classes to its members.
“Every club is looking at fitness – that’s a lifestyle, not a movement or fad. All country clubs, city clubs, community centers and rec centers need to pay attention to that,” Condon said. “Aquatic centers and pools are popular, as well. I think that’s another area that we’ll continue to grow.”
The Red Rocks Country Club was founded in 1975 as a nine-hole golf course with a small clubhouse. It expanded to 18 holes in 1983 and rebuilt its clubhouse to its previous 13,000-square-foot size in 1997.
