A New Jersey-based spa chain is applying pressure to the Denver market.
Massage parlor Hand and Stone will open its 12th location in Colorado this weekend. It’s the first in what the company’s CEO believes will be a five-shop expansion over the next 18 months.
“Denver’s one of our top markets in the country,” CEO Todd Leff said. “It fits our demographics – being healthy and active.”
The first of the five franchises to open will be operated by Laura Huang. Her Hand and Stone location at 7650 W. Virginia St. in Lakewood will open on Sunday.
The 2,650-square-foot parlor will contain eight massage rooms. It took 2½ months to complete the building’s interior and cost $500,000 to open.
Huang, who graduated from DU with an MBA in 2012, said she’s always wanted to open a massage parlor.
“I was looking into opening a business, and of course I wanted to do something I liked,” she said. “That industry matched up with my passion.”
Physical therapist John Marco founded Hand and Stone in 2004. Leff became CEO in 2009, when the company licensed 23 franchises. Today, there are 215 Hand and Stone locations across 23 states and in Canada.
